“Patrick is a very knowledgeable and inspiring teacher! It is really a joy to work with someone who not only understands the vocal apparatus, but also knows the joy of singing and performing, and also understands the work involved in being a singer. I always felt I walked away from my lessons with more ammo in my vocal arsenal! That is the greatest gift from a teacher.”

“Patrick has a great way of working with singers – with a solid vocal technique, he brings out the best in each performer.”

“If you work in the club/piano bar scene here in NYC, I know you’ve heard of Patrick DeGennaro. He’s a fantastic performer, pianist, songwriter – the whole kaboodle. What you may not know is that he’s also an incredible vocal teacher and coach, coming to that work with great ears and a really solid and efficient approach to vocal technique that really focuses on the instrument itself. What going to the gym and working with a trainer does for the body, Patrick’s work does for the voice – I can’t possibly recommend him enough. He rocks and being part of this workshop has been awesome.”

“Patrick is a “working singers” teacher. He knows exactly how to convey the principles of vocal technique to those of us who use our voices consistently. He teaches a healthy, comfortable, streamlined way of singing, that can be applied to any style of music.”

When I started working with Patrick I was in trouble. After 4 years of singing rock and roll in smoky piano bars without warming up, I was headed for some real vocal damage. I first worked with Patrick on a weekly basis for close to a year. From the very first session I never doubted for one moment that I would not only regain full use of my singing voice, but that I would develop a stronger sound, a wider range and most importantly a greater understanding of what it means to sound and feel vocally healthy. I have a small stack of warm up tapes from my lessons that I use before every audition, performance and piano bar shift. So even though my hectic schedule currently makes steady sessions with Patrick an impossibility I am still getting returns on my investment. Being a professional singer is like any other career that depends on a skilled muscle. For surgeons it is good hands, for dancers – strong bodies. As a singer I have learned that I have a responsibility to maintain the health of my vocal chords. Patrick taught me that. He also taught me how. I will never be able to fully express my thanks to him for giving me that gift. It has been tremendously empowering. And it was really easy too.

When I came to Patrick DeGennaro, I was headed for trouble — a vocally exhausted New York club singer and musical theatre actress with a heavy belter’s voice, a break the size of Wisconsin, no mid-range, and severe vocal stress. In the four years I’ve been studying with Patrick he has helped me to lighten and expand my instrument to produce a healthy sound and a much wider, balanced range. I believe with all my heart — and voice — that Patrick DeGennaro saved my career.

Having been a musician all my life – the last seven years professionally in NYC (as a keyboard player/singer) – and after having studied at music conservatories in Denmark as well as four years of studying at Berklee College Of Music in Boston I can tell when I meet a great teacher.

Patrick is not only a fun and inspiring vocal teacher but he also completely relates he’s coaching towards your own needs. For instance I’ve always hesitated taking voice lessons fearing that I would start sounding too ‘musical theater-ish’ or too ‘classical’…. (kind of like the fear of going to a hair dresser when you have long hair knowing that whatever you tell them – they are still going to cut your hair too short!)…

I’m sure Patrick could take me down that road (musical theater) if I had asked him to, instead he has made me find a strength and focus in my ‘natural voice’. A strength I never imagined was there in the first place. I learned about Patrick via my songwriting and performance partner who’s voice has grown and found itself dramatically this last year and she kept recommending Patrick.

Now – after only three lessons – people are coming up to ME asking what I’ve been doing lately to make my voice sound so rich!
If you sing and feel the tiniest room for improvement or need new inspiration you owe yourself a visit with Patrick.

I’ve been singing since I was 5 years old, but I have never had more fun or made more progress working with my voice since I met Patrick two years ago.

He offered an effective, practical technique I could truly relate to. His relaxed style and homey teaching environment is comfortable for even the most timid first-timers (yes! I was terrified my first lesson!)
Most importantly, Patrick’s technique is designed not to fail. The exercises are challenging without being too complicated. I never felt frustrated or incapable of working through lesson tapes on my own.

Patrick pays special attention to the specific needs of your voice. Just doing the exercises–even when i wasn’t sure WHAT I was doing–really paid off. Eventually, the muscles and lessons came together where I began to have an honest connection to my voice. I discovered how to refine and strengthen it. I learned to create new sounds and expand my range with ease and sensitivity.

After a while, I stopped TRYING to sing and started to let my own, unique voice be free. Patrick refuses take credit for that, but I love his technique and I’m loving my voice, too!

I have been studying with Patrick for about six years.Over that time he has helped me develop my voice to depths that I never imagined. His honesty and knowledge of the craft are the best tools I could have used to improve my technique. Patrick is a professional who not only teaches you to give your voice to others, but to give yourself to your voice.

I started studying voice with Patrick in June 2001. I had a 2 hour solo concert coming up and I was experiencing vocal strain and fatigue; not to mention pre-show jitters that almost always contribute pressure to the throat. As an emergency measure I booked an appointment. After the first lesson I was able to alleviate the tension in my larynx by applying the “soft application” technique I was taught at the outset. Not only have I been able to sing effectively through stress, but I’ve also increased and strengthened the top notes of my vocal range and I’ve only had about 5 or 6 actual lessons. Since I’ve recorded each session, I vocalize “with Patrick” on a daily basis.

I have studied with at least 5 different coaches throughout the course of my career, and this method is far and away the most productive and Mr. DeGennaro is certainly the most articulate teacher I’ve had in this field.

Patrick’s technique has helped me tremendously in finding my own voice, my own sound. I discovered I didn’t need all the effort I was putting into it. I can sing twice as long with half the work. And the warm ups are so quick and effective I can get to the singing a lot faster – most helpful for those early morning auditions. Patrick has taught me that once things are centered, balanced, my voice can move and play and do anything I want. I like that the focus is always on health. I’ve sung hours in smoky piano bars and I’ve done a musical tour where I was performing at 9AM and both times I was grateful for a technique that helps me to warm up quickly and recover easily.

Patrick DeGennaro’s lessons get me warmed up and ready to kill any appointment I go to. His ability to work you through any piece of music on the spot at a seconds notice is truly remarkable.

No matter my coaching needs, Patrick’s always consistently been a valuable resource for me. His technical proficiency on the piano is unmatched in a variety of musical genres. Whether I’m prepping for a big audition or simply enhancing my repertoire, he comes through time and time again offering not just flawless accompaniment but also solid vocal technique. He’s my secret weapon heading into auditions, and I can’t recommend him enough.
